YURI ROZUM INTERNATIONAL

CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

The Yuri Rozum International Charitable Foundation is a Russian registered charity, which was set up in April 2005 on the initiative of the Russian Academy of the Natural Sciences[1] and the Music and Arts School for Children named after Yuri Rozum.

The International Board of Guardians of the Foundation brought together many prominent artists, musicians, politicians and businessmen from Russia, Germany, United Kingdom and the United States.

Our charity work is aimed at bringing classical music and music culture into everyday lives of ordinary people throughout Russia and abroad through organising music festivals, concerts, competitions, exhibitions, master-classes and various media projects popularising classical music.

The First International Music Festival “Zvezdny” (translates from Russian as “starry”) organised by the Foundation was held in June 2005.

The official opening of the Festival took place at the Zevzdny Gorodok (the “Star City” of Russian cosmonauts).  Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, opened the Festival, which brought together famous and young, classical and folk musicians from several countries and was a great success.

Annual Music Festivals have now become one of the major projects of the Foundation.  The 2nd International Music Festival was held in April 2006 to full houses and a lot of media attention.  Among the stars taking part were Yuri Rozum, Bolshoi Opera soloists Nikolay Baskov, Makvala Kasrashvili and Vladimir Redkin, internationally acclaimed Georgian singer Tamara Gverdtsiteli and the famous Flamenco Dance Theatre of Carmen de Torres from Spain to name but a few.

The Festival has now become an annual event in the cultural calendar.  The Foundation would like to be able to invite more international performers to come to the Moscow region to take part in future Festivals.

Young Musicians

One of our major priorities is working with young people.  In the 21st century young people all over the world as never before need to know, understand and respect classical traditions.  The very first event organised by the Foundation was a concert of young talented musicians dedicated to the UNESCO International Day for the Protection of Childhood, which took place on 1 June 2005 at the Armoury of the Moscow Kremlin.  During this event the Foundation was able to raise money to award 10 annual scholarships.

This day has now become a traditional day for concerts of the Foundation Scholarship holders and also an annual event.  Although still very young and only starting its work the Charity now has 52 scholarship holders aged between 7 and 17.  All of them are exceptionally talented Russian musicians in desperate need of support to enable them to continue their studies.  We have more young musicians in need of financial help and we are looking for sponsors for them.

Concerts organised by the Foundation give young musicians a platform to give live public performances and a chance to play alongside their prominent colleagues.  We would like to be able to organise many more concerts using this formula both in Russian and in other countries and we are looking for sponsors and venues to host them.

The Foundation has won the right to implement the Government programme “Where art is born”, which was launched in autumn 2006.  Within the framework of the programme the expert group will visit music and arts schools of each of the 7 major regions of the country to select the best music school and the best arts school of the region.  The Foundation will also be looking for talented young musicians who need special attention and help. The first stage of the programme covering Russian Far East was successfully completed in December 2007.  Three schools of Primorsky region and Yakutia received grants, new musical instruments and several young people became Foundation scholarship holders.

The Foundation has an on-going commitment to the Music and Arts School named after Yuri Rozum, which is situated in the Moscow region of Shchyolkovo.  The old school building is over 60 years old and in need of major refurbishment.  Due to constant high humidity many of the music instruments were in a desperate need of repair and replacement.  The Foundation has raised awareness and funds to buy new music instruments for the school and together with the local administration to build a new school and an arts and music centre with a concert hall. The new school building had its official opening in April 2008, which was marked by a concert and masterclasses organised by the Foundation.
