Yuri Rozum
(piano)
STUNNED, amazed and comprehensively gobsmacked.
After 100 minutes of Yuri Rozum’s pianistic wizardry, the Elder Hall Steinway
knows what it truly means to be a concert grand.
Four demanded encores and a full-house standing
ovation were the least we could offer Yuri Rozum, one of the rightful heirs to
Russia’s great pianistic heritage.
Rozum’s technical attainments are magisterial
vast seeming to always leave him with expressive breathing space in the
tightest digital corners and covering an astounding range of color and touch.
To all that skill, Rozum adds an essential,
intense musicality.
For young student pianists, this was an ideal
example of the concert experience.
We will rarely hear its like — not, at least,
until Yuri Rozum’s already eagerly anticipated return.
