After a four-year absence, esteemed Russian pianist Yuri Rozum returned to Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts on Saturday for an exciting performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No.2 in C Minor”.
The
performance served as a preview of the virtuoso’s not-to-be missed recital
Thursday at Evangel University’s Chapel Auditorium.
From the
broad melodies in the outer movements of Saturday’s performance to the introspection
of the haunting adagio and the fastest passage work, Rozum displayed complete
command of his instrument.
Under
guest conductor Scott Speck’s astute direction, the orchestra blended
beautifully with Rozum and performed in top form.
The surging
emotions of the big tunes were soulful and refined, while the ethereal second
movement achieved a rapt quality.
Floated notes from horn and bassoon added to the adagio’s otherworldly
mood, with Michael Lomax’s exquisite clarinet lines adding the final touch of
elegance.
Rozum’s
dazzling performance was awarded a standing ovation and numerous curtain calls,
after which he treated the crowd to an encore of Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in G
minor”. The piece provided the
perfectly cap to the evening.
